Sameportalen – welcome to us!

The reindeer husbandry district as an organisation

Many people believe that a reindeer husbandry district, sameby, is a physical place where reindeer herders live in kåtor and cabins in a limited area but this is incorrect. The sameby is similar to an economic association for individual reindeer herders who practise reindeer husbandry. Every district has its own area of land where the reindeer can pasture. There are 51 reindeer husbandry districts in Sweden and 32 are situated in Norrbotten (see map from Länsstyrelsen).

The reindeer husbandry districts in the municipality of Jokkmokk
In the municipality of Jokkmokk there are 5 districts. 3 are so called mountain reindeer husbandry districts (they have all-season grazing areas above the cultivation limit and their winter grazing areas below the cultivation limit) and 2 forest reindeer husbandry districts (all-season areas above the Lappmark boundary and their winter grazing areas below that boundary).

  • Jåhkågasska Tjiellde
  • Sirges
  • Tuorpon

Forest reindeer husbandry districts:

  • Sierri
  • Udtjá

The forest husbandry districts are active in the forest during the entire year whereas the mountain husbandry districts migrate between the winter grazing areas in the forest and the summer grazing areas close to the Norwegian border.

Companies

The Sámi culture is very closely linked to the traditional livelihoods such as reindeer husbandry, fishing, hunting, handicraft etc. Today many Sámi work within other areas as well, as for an example, tourism. The following companies are closely linked to Sámi and members of the reindeer husbandry districts in Jokkmokk.
